WAGASA (Japanese Umbrella)

You were excited about your Kyoto visit today, but it rained.....

No wonder you feel blue but don't worry. YUMEYATAKA offers a varieties of rental KIMONOs on which you never have to worry about maintenance afterward!

In Kyoto, some gardens are really suitable to visit especially on rainy days. When wearing KIMONO, we Japanese wear WAGASA (Japanese umbrella) made of WASHI (Japanese craft paper), namely, Gakayama-washi from Tomaya prefecture, Minoh-washi from Gifu, and Echizen-washi from Fukui, etc. To make it water repellent, those papers are coated with oil.

Since WGASA costs a lot, and demands certain ways of maintenance, it's no longer used commonly, and chances you see them are only in movies or theater plays nowadays. However, in HANAMACHI*, WAGASA is still used by MAIKO and GEIKO.

Lately, WAGASA-like umbrellas made of chemical fabrics are on the market. When you wear KIMONO, and if it rains, why don't you try this kind of products? We YUMEYAKATA Information Center offers these easy-to-handle WAGASA at low prices. Please stop by before you go out in the rain.

HANAMACHI*: districts where MAIKO and GEIKO reside.
